How to Calculate Your Weighted GPA: Example
Suppose a Student has 3 courses: (Sample Student Courses)
Course Name | Grade | Credits | Course Level |
---|---|---|---|
Math | A | 4 | AP (+1.0) |
History | B+ | 3 | Honors (+0.5) |
English | B | 3 | Regular (+0) |
Step by step calculation
- Enter the 3 rows exactly as above:
- Math, A, 4, AP/IB
- History, B+, 3, Honors
- English, B, 3, Regular
- Click Calculate GPA.
- See if the result says 4.04.
How to calculate manually
1️⃣ Convert grades to GPA points:
- A = 4.0, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0
2️⃣ Add weight for course level:
- Math (AP): 4.0 + 1.0 = 5.0
- History (Honors): 3.3 + 0.5 = 3.8
- English (Regular): 3.0 + 0 = 3.0
3️⃣ Multiply by credits:
- Math: 5.0 × 4 = 20.0
- History: 3.8 × 3 = 11.4
- English: 3.0 × 3 = 9.0
4️⃣ Add total points & credits:
- Total Points = 20.0 + 11.4 + 9.0 = 40.4
- Total Credits = 4 + 3 + 3 = 10
5️⃣ Weighted GPA = Total Points ÷ Total Credits:
40.4 ÷ 10 = 4.04
✅ So, your calculator should show:
Your Weighted GPA is: 4.04
Weighted vs Unweighted GPA — Quick Guide
So, what’s the real difference?
✔️ Unweighted GPA is the basic average of your grades on a standard 4.0 scale — it treats all classes equally.
✔️ Weighted GPA gives extra points for advanced courses like Honors, AP, or IB. For example, an A in a Regular class equals 4.0, but an A in an AP class could count as 5.0.
🎓 Why does this matter? Colleges and scholarship boards look at both GPAs to understand your course rigor — so knowing your weighted GPA can help you see how competitive you really are.

FAQs for Weighted GPA Calculator
❓ 1. What is a Weighted GPA?
A weighted GPA reflects the difficulty of your courses by adding extra points for Honors, AP, or IB classes.
For example, an A in a Regular class is 4.0, but in an AP class, it might be 5.0. Colleges use weighted GPAs to see how challenging your course load is.
❓ 2. How do I calculate my Weighted GPA?
To calculate a weighted GPA, multiply each course grade by its credit hours and weighting scale. Then add up the results and divide by the total number of credits. Or use our free Weighted GPA Calculator — it does all the work for you!
❓ 3. Do all high schools calculate Weighted GPA the same way?
Not always. Different schools may add different bonus points for Honors or AP classes.
Some use a 5.0 scale, others 4.5. Our calculator uses standard US weighting, but you can adjust your course levels to match your school’s policy.
